Page got a late start and is one of the youngest communities in the United States. It may sound funny, but it was founded in 1957! Page still has an interesting history though.
The city began as a housing camp for workers and their families who had jobs in construction of the nearby Glen Canyon Dam. The city now boasts over 7,000 year-round residents, mostly thanks to tourism to the dam and the lake. The dam, which backs up the Colorado River and creates Lake Powell, is a key component of the water use plan for the Western United States. In addition, the dam generates tons of electricity for the West. In fact, the dam along with the Navajo Generating Station, also located in town, are two of the biggest electrical generation plants in all of the West.
Moving to Page
Page is way up in the northern Arizona county of Coconino. It takes about five hours to get there from Phoenix and just as long from Las Vegas, Nevada.
Page is in the high desert, sitting at 4,300 feet above sea level. This produces a very arid climate. The summers are very hot, averaging in the high 90's in July and August. This means there are plenty of days well over 100 degrees. Winters are not cold but chilly, with 40's and 50's for highs. Though there can be a few frosts on winter nights, there is very little snow. In fact, Page is the definition of arid with less than five inches of any kind of precipitation every year!
If you're looking for an apartment for rent in Page, there are plenty of options. There is some seasonal fluctuation as tourists come to visit the dam and Lake Powell in the warmer months. However it shouldn't affect your apartment search and it shouldn't take you more than a couple of weeks to find a pad and get through the paperwork process.
There is a mix of single-family homes and apartment complexes and buildings, so you're sure to find something to suit your style and preference. Just be sure to save up your money for the first month's rent as well as a security deposit that is usually in the amount of an additional month's rent.
Neighborhoods of Page
Page is a pretty big place if you're used to the size of towns in the East, but for the West 16.5 square miles of land is smaller than some of the nearby ranches. Nearly all of the property rentals in Page are located in the triangle formed by State Route 89 and Highway 98. Lake Powell Boulevard is the main drag and forms a u-shape off of Highway 89 so getting in and out of Page is easy. Here are the general neighborhoods:
North Lake Powell Boulevard: From the city center up to the north, Lake Powell Boulevard is lined with everything you need. This is the main business area and there are two complexes to choose from. The Escalante Village Apartments and the Westview Apartments. Whether you are looking for one- or two-bedroom apartments, if you like convenience, this is your neighborhood. If you get hungry, you'll also be close to Ken's Old West all-you-can-eat restaurant!
City Center: The City Center is in the vertex of the triangle formed by Lake Powell Boulevard. This area is where the hospital is located. There are fewer apartment options here, but you are still near all the action and, depending on exact location, you should still be able to walk or bike for your daily needs. If you're feeling nostalgic, head to R. D.'s Drive In for an old-time burger, fries and shake.
South Lake Powell Boulevard: South of the center and connecting out to Route 89, Page gets decidedly quieter. This is a great area to find a house for rent, but there are also a couple more complexes down here. If North Lake Powell Boulevard is the heavier retail area, South Lake Powell Boulevard is the more industrial zone. Here you'll find boat service shops, auto shops and other service businesses. One unique attraction is the Canyon King Pizzeria. Come on in and have a slice in an old, restored paddle boat!
Living in Page
Page is known as the gateway to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Lake Powell is the main attraction and more than 3 million people drive all the way up here each year to have fun on the water and view the engineering feat of the dam. The lake provides all kinds of recreational opportunities for boaters and also holds an annual bass fishing tournament.
Fast food type restaurants are easy to find along North and South Lake Powell Boulevard. If you're looking for more home cooked fare, take yourself to Bonkers Restaurant for steak, chicken and a fresh Caesar Salad. An Arizona town would not be complete without a Mexican restaurant or two. Try Fiesta Mexicana or El Tapatio for burritos and margaritas.
Because Page is kind of out there, it has become pretty self-sufficient. There is a Walmart, Safeway, Dollar General and plenty of other recognizable chain stores. All of the fast food restaurants are represented, as are other service businesses like O'Reilly Auto Parts and Big O Tires.
Many people come up to page to enjoy the high desert climate and to golf at the Lake Powell National Golf Course. It is a unique experience to golf with views of the dam, Lake Powell and the surrounding Vermillion Cliffs that glow red at sunset.
Page is adjacent to the huge expanse of the Navajo Nation. The Native American influence is strong and proud in Page with plenty of opportunities to expand culturally. There are annual pow-wow's and Native American displays of arts, crafts and dance performances.
The Page Airport is located in the northeast part of town and has an annual airshow. The Lake Powell Air Affaire gives people free plane and helicopter rides, has skydiving and experimental plane exhibitions and of course lots of food and games for everyone. The airport also has flights to Phoenix and Denver so you don't have to make the trek to Phoenix.
The city takes care of its residents with all the community facilities that are expected. There is a senior center, library, and recreation center. The city also runs a public pool and there are several parks scattered around town. The huge Page Sports Complex out on Haul Road is a focal point for town recreation activities. There is plenty offered such as football, baseball, basketball, softball, and the newly added dodgeball! There are six lighted tennis courts in town and because of the great weather, you can play year-round.
