There are four main neighborhoods in Delano to choose from. You can't really go wrong in any of these areas, but you may like some better than others. Here is the breakdown on the neighborhoods:
Delano Memorial Parkis at the south end of town, by the public golf course. The views east of Lexington Street are beautiful thanks to the well-kept golf grounds.$$
The West School Zoneis a neighborhood in the west area of Delano that includes the Freemont Elementary School and the Robert F. Kennedy High School -- both are excellent schools.$$$
Terrace Place Neighborhoodis a mostly residential area with uniquely curved parallel streets. The homes here are larger than in most other parts of town. The nearby Terrace Elementary School is great if you have kids.$$$
North Delanoconsists of the northernmost residential area, where the homes are plentiful and affordable. This is the best area to hunt for rental accommodations.$$
Delano's Famous "Grape Strike"
As an important agricultural piece of Kern Country's grape-growing industry, Delano has been the political center of many agricultural rallies and organizations over the years. The most famous is called the "Delano Grape Strike," during which members of the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee walked away from their grape farming duties to call attention to poor working conditions and wages.
Cesar Chavez's group, the National Farm Workers' Association, jumped on board a week later and lo, history was written! The two groups married and became the United Farm Workers of America, and five years later, workers finally signed a major grape-growing contract that met their demands. Now all is well in grape-growing county, and thanks to the fine work of our predecessors, the grapes shall never go on strike again!
Celebrate Cesar Chavez Day!
Cesar Chavez -- that's right, one of the heroes of the Delano Grape Strike -- is also a celebrated hero for other pro-union workers throughout California and many other parts of the United States. As an official "tip of the hat" to this amazing community and national leader, the city of Delano, as well as the states of California, Colorado and Texas, recognize March 31 as "Cesar Chavez Day."

Glad you asked, fine prospective citizen! In fact the municipal council has a great number of plans to take care of you should you choose to occupy a rental home in this great city. The public officials here work daily to maintain the parks and recreational facilities in Delano, as well as to organize viable recycling options and pickups for citizens. The city also maintains a technology center and a great community website where citizens can find information on city planning and home renovation laws. Through this website citizens can sign up for a new water account, pay it online and survey pretty much anything they ever had questions about concerning the role of local government.It's the WikiLeaks of municipal government! Take advantage and read all the documents you can about the Fire Department, the Water Works and city zones!
The government website also has links to the Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise Zone Incentives that can help you to start your own hot dog stand in town -- or some kind of high-powered technological facility. It's your choice, really.
Delano: Keeping Seniors Fed and Healthy
The municipal government also champions a program called the Senior Citizens Nutrition Program, through which the Delano elderly are all privy to a daily hot lunch from Monday to Friday (on the weekends, food is their own problem). There are two delivery routes so that older gentlemen and ladies over the age of 62 can have lunch delivered, as well as a hosted lunch at the Senior Center on Ellington Street. All the city asks is a voluntary $2 "donation" per meal - but really, it's free. Honest. Now you may be saying, "I'm not old. How does this help me?" Well, you may not be old now, but guess what? You will be one day. In the meantime, bring grams and gramps along.
