A suburb of two suburban, agricultural centers, Keyes pulls from the best of its neighbors - the "water, wealth, contentment, health" of Modesto, and the almond growing heritage of Turlock.
Located within easy commuting distance to the Central Valley cities of Modesto (to the north) or Turlock (to the south), Keyes California is a small, agricultural community known for hot, dry summers, and being, well, pretty small, with just 5600 residents

Located within easy commuting distance to the Central Valley cities of Modesto (to the north) or Turlock (to the south), Keyes California is a small, agricultural community known for hot, dry summers, and being, well, pretty small, with just 5600 residents. Most people here have some connection to the Central Valley's agricultural economy - probably almonds, grazing, or grape-growing. If you are looking for a rural area with space to think, stretch, and explore, then Keyes may be just the place to find your next rental property.
Moving to Keyes
While little of California presents any weather-related challenges (no snow in this deep valley), you probably want to avoid the scorching summers when the mercury pushes 100 way too often. Winters can be rainy (at least, the farmers here hope they will be rainy), and California-cold, but winter, spring, and fall are great times to make the move.
Prepared renters will have the necessary documents collected before they search for apartments in Keyes. You'll want proof of income, your credit history, references, and enough deposit money to close the deal.
Keyes Neighborhoods
Keyes is tiny - and it is basically its own neighborhood. Most Keyes housing options are clustered along Highway 99, California's historic north-south artery which will easily get you to Sacramento, about ninety minutes north, if you need a big city fix. You can find rental properties throughout the area. Three bedroom homes are well below the state average and many come with ample lot sizes. You'll be hard-pressed to find condos for rent here. Apartments for rent will be slightly more available. Rental properties are generally available directly from owners - not many major complexes here. Live in the eastern part of Keyes for better park access. Live in the western part for better highway access and to be close to Golden Pizza when you need a quick slice.
Living in Keyes
Do you like pizza? Hope so, since Golden Pizza is one of the only dining options in this tiny town. Never fear, though, it's a short drive into Turlock or Modesto for more offerings from fast food to chains to local fare. Speaking of driving - this isn't a walking town, nor are there many transit options. Car is king here and the best way to get to work or school, or to run errands.
Similar to food options, retail is pretty limited here. You'll have access to some convenience-store-like amenities such as the Keyes Market, but not much else. Major big box retail is found north or south on Highway 99. Turlock has a nice retail area featuring plenty of grocery, home decor, and restaurant options.
Neighborhood recreation is found at Hatch Park in the center of town - great for picnicking and hanging with friends and family. All the shade in the world won't help in August and September, however, so head to the movies in Turlock or Modesto for air-conditioned fun in the summer months. There's also the Keyes Public Library, located in the southern part of town near Keyes Elementary School. The Library offers preschool story time Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at key times throughout the year.
If you're looking to have a group event while avoiding the hot summer weather, Keyes offers a Community Center for rent.
