Located in El Paso County in the State of Colorado, Air Force Academy is 10 square miles of land immediately north of Colorado Springs. It is a census-designated place (CDP) along with 11 other areas in the county. In the 2010 census, the town had a population estimate of 6,680 individuals, with an annual growth rate of 3.2 percent. More than 500 households are in the area, with an average of two to four persons living in each.
Air Force Academy is not your typical town, obviously, because in it is a military facility. This may mean that moving in may come with some prerequisites, like stricter rules and guidelines in proper living and decorum around the area. But don't be alarmed; it is still a free zone where you can do whatever you want as long as you are within the bounds of the law.
Before Leasing or Buying a House
When you reach the Air Force Academy, it is highly recommended that you visit the Housing Management Office (HMO) to receive guidance and counseling before going through any written agreement for housing, whether rental/lease or purchasing. Counseling will be about some military territories and restricted areas for rentals or businesses. If you were not able to visit the HMO for some reasons, you are still bound by the off-limits guidelines and ignorance is not an excuse. It doesn't hurt to know your rights and responsibilities.
Types of Housing
Aside from renting city apartments or condo rentals in the local community, you now may also choose to live in rental housing owned or managed by a private company. Here in the Air Force Academy, properties may be obtained through a privatized housing facility. A private residential management is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and management of the community.
The whole community has different types of accommodations from 1 bedroom apartments to 3 bedroom apartments, depending on your needs. You may arrange for different types of contracts spanning from a year-long tenancy to a month to month contract, whichever you prefer.
Air Force Academy is too small for neighborhoods, but its size and nature makes it one of the safer communities. Who would dare to do unlawful things there, right? But it is a nice neighborhood with highly organized roads and community establishment rules with ample apartments and renters.
The town is home to many perks and the amenities that you might enjoy. It has concert halls, parks, zoos, gardens, and even museums. Cheyenne Mountain State Park offers visitors a 20-mile of walk and bicycle trails on top of an ecosystem of local flora and fauna, which is a relaxing treat. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is an attraction including almost 800 animals. Also, the Money Museum is the largest museum in the United States that is entirely devoted to the art and science of currencies. Cha-ching!
Driving Around Air Force Academy
Due to frequently changing weather, the roads in the Air Force Academy can sometimes give unique difficulties for drivers, especially for first time travelers in the area. Also, during sports events, there could sometimes be an increase in the volume of traffic. You should take note of the speed limit inside the Academy, which is 45 MPH unless posted otherwise. All visitors must enter the North Gate.
