Fruitvale is a rather petite census-designated place in Mesa County, Colorado. Home to around 7,675 residents (2010 U.S. Census data), Fruitvale is a small part of the larger urban community, Grand Junction, nestled into the mountains north of the Colorado River. This is a beautiful part of the country, with the Colorado National Monument nearby to the west and intense forested mountain views all around. The CDP is just a short drive west down Highway 70 from Mount Garfield and Mount Lincoln.
Utilities
Fruitvale, as a census-designated place, doesn't sport its own municipal government. Since the local government is usually in charge of providing residents with sewage, running water and trash collection, this is potential wrench in the gears of a moving plan. Don't be put off, however! Since Fruitvale is a part of Grand Junction, it falls to the City of Grand Junction to provide citizens with these basic home amenities. Get in touch with the City offices and let them know the address of your new rental apt in Fruitvale to have them hook up sewer services, running water and trash collection.
When it comes to electricity, you have a few choices, including Grand Valley Power, Xcel Energy and Redlands Water and Power Co. Shop around for the best rates before signing on with any one provider. For your cable and internet service, check out Bresnan Communications, Time Warner Cable, Insight, Bright House or Comcast to work out a plan that suits your needs.
Renting an Apartment in Fruitvale
Although it's not unheard of to find a studio for rent in Fruitvale, it's a lot more common to see medium-sized houses in the rental listings. These homes include refurbished houses that were built in the 1970s to more modern, new homes built less than 10 years ago. Homes are spacious and if you're nice, some will even allow you to bring your dogs with you on moving day! Always a plus, don't you think? If you are keen on finding a smaller space, try further to the south edge of town. Prices are neither inexpensive nor particularly expensive, so if you're vaguely familiar with Colorado home values you'll be just fine. Make sure to set up all your utilities as far in advance as possible before you move into town.
Well, Fruitvale is a neighborhood in Grand Junction, so in truth, there aren't really any more neighborhoods to speak of. There are a few different sections of the community that stand out, however. The first of these is the parks and school area, at the southeastern corner. Here you'll find the Long Family Memorial Park, Longs Memorial Skate Park, and several local elementary and high schools. Further to the east is the City Market. The southwestern corner of Fruitvale is the most populated, both by residential homes and small businesses. The northern section is crossed by several main waterways and characterized by well-spaced houses and a few local shops.
Transportation
All of Grand Junction is served by Grand Valley Transit buses, and even though Fruitvale scores a low 35 for its Walk Score, the buses allow riders to bring their bicycles along. Translation? Fruitvale may not be overly pedestrian-friendly when it comes to getting errands done, but between the public transit system and your own two wheels, you'll still make good time and get some exercise while doing it.
Groceries
The major grocery stores are located just outside of Fruitvale, but you haven't got far to go to find some good-quality pantry and fridge-fillers. Safeway, Wal-Mart Supercenter, C & F Food Stores, Carniceria Sonora and Red Barn Farm and Gardens surround Fruitvale along the west, south and eastern town limits.
Restaurants
Looking for take-out or a nice dine-in option for those nights you just don't feel like turning on the stove (or microwave)? There are enough restaurants along Highway 70 on the east side of town to keep you trying something new every day. The list includes fast-food favorites like McDonald's and Sonic Drive In, as well as amazing cuisines like Qdoba Mexican Grill, China Jade and Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches.
