Review Content Guidelines

General Guidelines

People look at reviews on Apartment List for fair and honest reviews of your experience with a property. Experiences may differ but we expect honesty and respect in all reviews. We've put together these general guidelines to help set the tone for reviews on Apartment List.

• Relevance: Please make sure your contributions are appropriate and relevant. This is not the place for rants about political ideologies, a property’s employment practices, or other matters that don't address the core of the renter experience. Nor should you be posting if you have not had an actual interaction with the property. Don't post promotional content.
• Inappropriate content: We want your honest review , but this is no place for colorful and offensive language, threats, harassment, lewdness, hate speech, or other displays of bigotry. Any posts that call out individuals by name will be removed.
• Conflicts of interest: Your review should be unbiased and objective. For example, you shouldn't write reviews of your own property or employer, your friends' or relatives' business, your peers or competitors in your industry, or businesses in your networking group. Properties should never solicit or compensate you for your reviews.
• Original Content Only: Don't plagiarize content for review (narrative or photos). This also means you shouldn't use chatbots or other AI tools to create reviews, including using such tools to draft or revise.

Consequences for violations

Violations of these guidelines make all reviews less trustworthy, safe, and useful. If someone violates the guidelines, we may:

• Remove their content
• Limit their ability to use certain features
• Suspend or terminate their account

If we find unusual reviewing behavior or a violation of these guidelines, we may limit the ability to submit reviews. If someone violates state and federal laws, including the Federal Trade Commission Act, we might take legal action. This action may result in civil and criminal penalties.
