While Evans may seem like just a zip code and a place to sleep for nearly 40,000 residents, there's a lot more to it. Sure, it's termed a suburb of Augusta, but it really lies in a different county, not far from the border between Georgia and neighboring South Carolina. Its homes, condos and apartments are nestled into the rolling hills, and there are streams and some small lakes, partially hidden and protected by tall pines and native grasses. The Savannah River flows nearby. Were it not for the U.S. Census, it might not even exist, but Evans is an oddly-shaped "census-designated area" in Columbia County.
Motivating Your Move
There are all the normal conveniences of modern life, including convenience stores and gas stations; there are restaurants, but they're all clustered along the main thoroughfare. The Augusta Canal Headgate is one of the main attractions in the area, and Clarks Hill Lake provides recreational opportunities, including fishing. Evans residents appreciate nature trails and bicycle paths that transport them "back to nature" and away from small town "New South."
Home to the well-planned master development of Riverwood Plantation, a number of distinct neighborhoods exist within its boundaries, some of them gated and with their own "community" amenities. At Riverwood, a neighborhood pool offers some relief during the humid, semi-tropical summers, and the nine-hole Champions Retreat Golf Club.
Two additional golf courses exist in Evans, and they get plenty of play. A three-acre lake accommodates those who would rather fish than putt. Streams and other small lakes punctuate the county.
Residential Flavor
You'll have your choice of rental apartments in Evans, ranging from one to 3-bedroom units in mid-size complexes offering clubhouses, pools, secure grounds and fitness centers; some even provide high-speed internet access and free Wi-fi for residents. Many are pet friendly and some offer short-term rental availability. There are mobile home parks in Evans, too. Rents are reasonable, and you can find condos, townhomes and houses to rent as well. Clean up your credit, and be sure you have cash for a security deposit, although the deposit is commonly less than a full month's rent.
True Nightlife
Augusta sits at the head of the navigable portion of the Savannah River, and if you have a boat you can take off whenever weather permits. You might want to make it a priority to befriend a boat owner! Savannah, of course, is a city of many wonders, and with the beaches and coastal golf courses nearby, it's a paradise for the fisherman, sportsman, culture-seeker and gourmet. In Evans, not so much.
Golf Reigns Supreme
But, class, what is Augusta's claim to fame? The Masters Tournament, of course. Hope you like seeing a lot of green.
This is a classic, low-country suburb. People are friendly, Even though the time-honored tradition of garden parties and mint juleps has, for the most part, disappeared, you can count on finding shrimp and grits, or fried chicken and okra just about any time you have a hankering. Is that a good thing?
