The city was named after William Moultrie, a Revolutionary War hero who successfully defended Charleston, South Carolina against the British forces. Initially, the land of Moultrie was all part of Colquitt County; however, in the early 1900s developers began to divvy up the land amongst themselves. During this period, Moultrie established an identity as a prosperous farming town in Georgia. Even to this day, agriculture remains a significant portion of Moultrie's economy. Currently, Moultrie has a population just north of 14,000.
Because Moultrie features lots of arable land, it is an ideal location or farmers or for anyone desiring privacy from their neighbors. The 2008 housing crisis continues to plague Moultrie; however, this is a good thing for prospective residents.
