Named after Chief Chillicothe, who lived in the area, Chillicothe is actually an ancient Shawnee word meaning "principal place." This appropriately describes the city because it was a juncture for the Atchison, Topeka and Sante Fe Railway for much of its history. Now, Illinois Route 29 runs through Chillicothe from north to south, connecting the area with I-180 to the north and Peoria to the south.
