While at first glance Machesney Park might seem like a blast from the past, this forward thinking little city is actually quite progressive. It's considered a suburb of nearby Rockford but it's far from being a typical suburban community. Machesney Park prides itself on offering everything its resident need to live happy and healthy lives without ever leaving their community. From entertainment and recreational activities to having a wide variety of living accommodations, this place offers something for everyone.

Renting in Machesney Park

Renting here is pretty much like renting in any other small city with a chip on its shoulder; come prepared. You will need to fill out an application and expect a credit check to be run. Background checks are also not uncommon here. You should prepare a small packet of references from past landlords. If you have a pet make sure they are mentioned on the references. First and last month's rent along with a security deposit is going to be required as well. In most cases you will also need deposits for utilities. If you have a pet you can also expect to pay a monthly fee to your landlord.

Neighborhoods

When you dip below a population of 25,000 you are going to find that most neighborhoods are real estate and zoning designations and little more. This is true even in Machesney Park and even though there are some mild exceptions. There are 5 neighborhood designations here. The primary difference is in how tight the real estate market is in the area.

Harlem: No, it's not the Harlem you have seen in movies. This is a nice residential neighborhood where you will see single-unit homes along with a few duplexes. This is an older and well established neighborhood and the rental market is scarce here. If you find something you like, snap it up fast.

Forest Hills: If you are interested in a duplex homes or large single-unit home, this is a great place to start looking. You will find that this area is a bit more laid-back owing to it being primarily residential. There are numerous parks and recreational activities housed in this area as well.

Maple: For those interested in apartment complexes with great amenities, this is the area to start your search process. Close to the village center, this area has great housing options along with nearby entertainment and dining venues.

Village Center: This is the heart of the city. This area is best known for trendy dining locations, pubs and shopping. There are plenty of housing options here from smaller single-unit homes to townhouses and apartments.

Life in Machesney Park

One huge local attraction is the Rockford Speedway on Forest Hills Road. Even if you aren't a fan of the races you will quickly learn when they are being held and to avoid the road during peak traffic hours. The Burpee Museum of Natural History is also a great nearby attraction.

For dining, you have tons of choices. Nunzio's Italian Restaurant is a local favorite as is the Singapore Grill. Probably the most loved local favorite is the Pug Dog Diner. They have huge hot dogs, some of the best burgers in existence and plenty of other choices.

If you are in the market for something a little more stout, pay a visit to The Hope and Anchor English Pub. This is a great place to meet friends for a drink or casual meal. You can sample all of the traditional English Pub Grub or just sample some pasties and see what all the fuss in Harry Potter was about! Yes, they offer both traditional Cottage Pie and Fish and Chips. Chase the lot of it with a stout British ale and you will feel like you spent the afternoon in London!
