More people are familiar with President Washington's home Mount Vernon than they are the small city of the same name in Illinois. However, this state's hidden gem pays homage to the country's history on a daily basis. While Mount Vernon would eventually become the county seat, the town was originally unreachable by road. Thanks to two residents, a bridge was built that spanned Casey Creek on the town's southeast side and allowed easier travel in and out of town; the road is now known as Old Centralia Road. Since the creation of the road, settlers were finally able to populate Mount Vernon. It has since become a hub of manufacturing. In present-day Mount Vernon, an Interstate highway connects the town to the rest of the state and country. This paved the way for large manufacturing facilities such as Continental Tire of North America, the only one in the country, and distribution centers for retailers and manufacturers such as NAPA, FedEx, and Walgreens. Because of this, Mount Vernon is a great place to live, and you'll find plenty of property rentals in the area if you're looking to relocate.
