Peru, Illinois that is! Peru is a small industrial community located in northern Illinois, in LaSalle County. Because Peru and the neighboring town of LaSalle are so closely associated with each other, they are known as the "twin cities." Peru officially became a city in 1851, initially as a thriving river port along the Illinois river. It has a population of just over 10,200 and covers a land area of 9.07 square miles. Located not far from Lake Michigan, it is a small town with lots to offer. Chicago, the third largest city in the United States, is just a day trip away.
Ice, ice, baby! The city's first industry was ice harvesting. Being located along the river meant that this industry thrived in the early days. Unfortunately, over the years, many of the historical buildings were ignored, and most are no longer standing. But there is a small downtown that reflects the city's heritage.
The population growth has remained relatively steady in recent years, making it an ideal location to live. There is a great selection of places to live in, including pet-friendly apartments. Rental apartments are usually available in various sizes. Most apartment complexes have one- to three-bedroom units, and some even have a studio for rent if you are looking for something small and cozy.
Getting Started
To rent an apartment, you should start with a detailed wish list. Finding a place is much easier when you know exactly what you want. Stop by the local market to pick up a newspaper or flyer to begin your search. And if you need help, get a realtor to assist you in finding an apt for rent. Peru is a great area to live in, so make sure to check out the downtown while doing your home search. You can begin your search at any time, but just be ready to move fast. Good units go quickly, so if you can't take a tour right away, you risk losing out. It may take a few weeks to find the right place, so be patient. And when you find the right apartment, don't wait, because it might not be available for too long.
Signing on the Dotted Line
When the day comes to sign your rental agreement, make sure you bring the following: first and last months' rent, proof that you can actually pay for the unit and your past rental history. The more detail, the better. Your landlord wants to know that you'll be reliable, and it's up to you to prove it! And be prepared to submit to a background and credit check. If you come prepared and pass all the checks, you'll be ready to move in.
Located in the heart of beautiful Illinois Valley, Peru is a scenic place to call home. The town is governed by a mayor, and has both its own police force and fire department, making it relatively safe as well. Although it doesn't have discernible neighborhoods, there are some top apartment complexes in town:
Country Manor: Regarded as one of the top apartment complexes in Peru, this place offers quality living at affordable prices. All appliances are included, and you get free high-speed Internet service.
Marquette Manor: A smaller facility with a selection of rental apartments from one- to three-bedrooms. Experience apartment living at affordable prices. The CVS Pharmacy down the street has everything you need in a pinch.
LaSalle Manor: A nice complex with two- and three-bedroom units. It is a friendly community with an outdoor patio for everyone to enjoy. If you want to feel like a part of the area, then this is a great option. Mattheissen Park is nearby, for when you need some fresh air.
When you live in a great location, you have to enjoy nearby attractions. If you enjoy the outdoors, then Lake Michigan is the place for you! Fishing is a popular activity on the lake, including ice fishing in the winter. You can also take a scenic cruise, explore more than 50 lighthouses or enjoy the beaches. If you are really adventurous, you can camp in one of the campgrounds or hike through the gorgeous forest. Any way you slice it, there is outdoor action of all kinds.
For big city fun, head out to Chicago. It offers everything you would expect from the big city. Millennium Park is a must. With outdoor art on display and a beautiful garden, it is worth the trip all by itself. Skydeck Chicago is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and offers amazing views. There is also the Shedd Aquarium, the Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum for those who want to experience the culture of Chicago. For sports fans, there is plenty of action all year long. The Bears play football in the fall, the Cubs and White Sox play baseball in the summer (and make for a great rivalry), the Blackhawks play hockey and the Bulls play basketball in the winter.
All of this excitement is just a short drive away from your home in Peru!
