Flatwoods is the birthplace of Billy Ray Cyrus, the successful singer-songwriter who nowadays might be best known for fathering Miley Cyrus.
The city of Flatwoods is found in Greenup County, Kentucky, and is a suburb of Ashland just down the Ohio River. There were 7,423 people officially living in Flatwoods as of the 2010 census, and about 3,000 properties spread across the 4.5 square miles the city takes up. There are no huge urban areas close by, but several other small cities like Ashland, Ironton, and Ironville about five miles to the south. Across the Ohio River, you'll also find Dean State Forest and Crown City Wildlife Area right there on your doorstep.
Moving to Flatwoods
It's important to consider the vacancy rate when you move somewhere. Flatwoods' vacancy rate is actually fairly low, at only 8 percent, so finding somewhere to live won't be a breeze, especially with several small cities within commuting distance of each other. This makes good real estate a bit more precious. You can expect to find a majority of housing for rent in the form of detached family homes, although there are also some two-bedroom apartments available. It's sensible to start searching early, and make sure that you have everything you'll need to secure a place quickly. We're talking money for a deposit, references, proof of earnings, and so on.
Neighborhoods in Flatwoods
There are a couple of neighborhoods to choose from in Flatwoods, and the city as a whole has a WalkScore of 57, making it "somewhat walkable." If you live and work close to the center, you'll be fine, but if you're further out you're going to need your own transport -- ideally a car or motorbike, but a bicycle might do -- to get in and out of the city and beyond, as there's no public transit service available.
City Center: You are more likely to find apartments for rent in Flatwoods here, and you'll find some decent restaurants up Argillite Road running through the city, including Toro Loco Mexican and Little Caesar's Pizza.
Lexington Avenue / Argillite Road: You're unlikely to find studio apartments here, with most housing made up of three- to four- bedroom detached homes. There are a couple of schools in the area, including Russell-McDowell Intermediate School, and a few fast-food restaurants as well. Big Mac anyone?
Living in Flatwoods
Flatwoods has a low crime rate and is well situated on the Ohio River, with a couple of national forests nearby for lovers of the outdoors. Other major urban areas, in particular big cities, aren't really found nearby, but there are enough smaller cities and towns to give the entire region a bit of variety.
There are plenty of restaurants and bars down Argillite Road -- including Giovanni's Pizza and Great Taste Chinese Buffet -- to give your taste buds some variety, and while transport via bus through the city is limited, there are plenty of state routes running up and down the Ohio River, with Interstate 64 going east and west about 15 miles south.
