Jeanerette is a little over an hour south of Baton Rouge. It has been around since the Civil War, and its 5,530 residents are so sweet that Jeanerette is known as the Sugar City. Okay, maybe that nickname is due to the city's history in the sugarcane industry. But still, this place is worth a look during your apartment search.
Looking for a Home in Jeanerette
The cost to buy a home here is less than half the national average, while the cost to rent is a little over half the average cost for home rentals. So no matter what your budget is, you should be able to find places for rent in Jeanerette that you can easily afford. Take advantage of this by checking out serviced apartments or three-bedroom houses for rent that would eat up your whole paycheck in any other city. Here you can live like royalty, switching out overtime at work for more time wading through the bayous! Jeanerette Neighborhoods
As with any move, be sure to allow yourself time to get to know your new city. You'll have your choice of neighborhoods, so pick the one you love best. Here are two favorites:
Weeks / Patoutville: If you want to live near the water, you can expect to pay a premium for it. Yep, that's right; this is the most desirable neighborhood to live in, but it's right on Weeks Bay. As such, it's fairly remote, but at least it's close to the Russell Sage Foundation Marsh Island State Wildlife Refuge, as well as Cypremort Point State Park.
City Center: If you want to live a little more inland, this is your best bet. This is much more walkable than some of the more remote areas, making it easy for you to get around to places like Robie's Food Center and nearby Lake Fausse Point State Park.

If you want a taste of authentic Louisiana food, head to Yellow Bowl Restaurant for some spicy Cajun dishes. If you're in the mood to shop, you can find deals at Family Dollar or Dollar General, so bring your dollar bills! You can also drive to Lafayette, New Iberia, and of course Baton Rouge to shop at local malls.
