Initially, Mount Airy came to prominence in the region because it was a train station for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Because this railroad connected the city to Baltimore and to D.C., it has always had a strategic importance. Today, Mount Airy no longer depends on the railroad to generate revenue for the city, and instead, it is a growing city with a population of 9,288 at the time of the 2010 Census.
