Overview of Findings

Apartment List has released Ann Arbor’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters nationwide, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the country’s 111 million renters.

"Ann Arbor renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "They gave most categories above average scores."

Key Findings in Ann Arbor include the following:

  • Ann Arbor renters gave their city an A+ overall.

  • The highest-rated categories for Ann Arbor were safety and low crime, quality of local schools, public transit, pet-friendliness, social life and recreational activities, which all received A+ grades.

  • The only area of concern to Ann Arbor renters is weather, which received a score of F.

  • Ann Arbor did relatively well compared to other cities in Michigan like Grand Rapids (B+) and Detroit (F).

  • Ann Arbor earned similar scores compared to other large college towns like Boulder (A+), Austin (A-) and Boston (A), but earned higher marks than Bloomington (B+) and Athens (B).

  • The top rated cities nationwide for renter satisfaction include Scottsdale, AZ, Irvine, CA, Boulder, CO and Ann Arbor, MI. The lowest rated cities include Tallahassee, FL, Stockton, CA, Dayton, OH, Detroit, MI and Newark, NJ.
