Eastwood is an unincorporated community that falls within the Kalamazoo Charter Township, so it's not legally a city. But it's not the only area with this designation; it shares the township with Westwood, which is - you guessed it! - west of Eastwood.
Eastwood is a small community just northeast of Kalamazoo. Think of it as a fairly large neighborhood in a major Michigan city. More importantly, Eastwood is less than an hour east of the shores of Lake Michigan. This is exciting news if you've always wanted to live by one of the Great Lakes, and who doesn't? If you are considering becoming the 6,341st resident in this unincorporated community, now is the time to start your search for a home for rent in Eastwood.
Moving to Eastwood
The vacancy rate in this area is a little under the national average, so start looking for rental housing as soon as you can. As long as you give yourself a couple of months for your housing search, you should be able to find the 1 bedroom apartment, condo for rent, or rental home you are looking for.
The Price You'll Pay for a Home
One of the best things about Eastwood is its cheap housing; house prices are less than half the national average. So instead of pinching your pennies in order to afford a studio apartment or a shack anywhere else, you can start checking out more spacious options here if you'd like. Sure, you might not end up with a mansion on your budget, but maybe you can get a house or a larger apartment unit. It's nice to have a few choices you can afford.
Types of Homes in Eastwood
The majority of houses in this area are single family homes. But if you happen to have your heart set on a mobile home, townhouse or apartment, you can probably find one with a little digging. Just note that most of the homes here are on the smaller, older side. The majority were built before 1969, and more than half feature zero to two bedrooms.
If you look hard, you can find some homes built after 2000, with four or even five bedrooms. You'll just need to have some extra patience, though having a great credit score and perfect rental history wouldn't hurt, either! Oh yeah -- regardless of the kind of home you want, you should be prepared to put down a deposit that is equal to the first month's rent. Luckily, with the low prices you'll find in Eastwood, that shouldn't be hard to do.
Neighborhoods in Eastwood
All the space in Eastwood is taken up by land, all 2 square miles of it anyway. So waterfront living may not be in your future here, but hey, the coast is still a short drive away. Before you plan your next trip to Lake Michigan, figure out where you want to live in this little area.
North Eastwood: This area is near Gull Road, which is a major street that can easily take you around Eastwood and even out of it. So the feel of the area is a bit busy, but the nearby Spring Valley Park balances it out with its big, breathtaking lake. Fishing, anyone?
South Eastwood: This area is just north of the Kalamazoo River, so you can maybe get a little glimpse of some flowing water from your own neighborhood. This is also near Sherwood Park, Kalamazoo Public Library, and Harding's Friendly Market. So you can become one with nature, read a book, or go shopping close to your home in the southern part of Eastwood.
West Eastwood: If you want to be slightly closer to Lake Michigan than most other people in Eastwood, the western area is where it's at. There are not many businesses here, so it's not super walkable.
East Eastwood: Let's face it, East Eastwood is just fun to say. Apart from that, this fairly quiet area is home to McGonigles Irish Pub and Dollar General.
Apartment Complexes in Eastwood
Country Meadow Apartments: You'll find this complex near the busy Gull Road, 5 minutes from downtown Kalamazoo. You can choose from 1 and 2 bedroom apartments for rent, and they all have central heat and air, which means you don't have to worry about freezing or melting in extreme weather. That's always a plus.
Big Bend Apartments: These apartment homes offer a bit more space, with 2 and 3 bedroom units. They somehow combine affordability with luxury, which should at least pique your curiosity.
LakeView Apartments: This complex offers a choice between 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments, so put on your decision-making cap before you arrive. You should also bring your Frisbee, because these apartments are near Spring Valley Park.
Living in Eastwood
There are a few stores, eateries, and parks scattered around Eastwood, but it's not exactly a hotbed of large shopping centers. That's okay, though -- the bigger city of Kalamazoo has all but engulfed Eastwood, making it easy to hit South Kalamazoo Mall and the stores of downtown Kalamazoo. You'll also find lots of breweries, movie theaters, golf courses, and museums in this fairly big city.
And it's easy to get there, thanks to the major street called Gull Road, which turns into a freeway called M-43. Take it southwest to get to Red Arrow Golf Course, Kalamazoo Valley Museum, Sutherland Park, and the numerous other attractions in the bigger city. And when you want to get to Lake Michigan, just drive west on Interstate 94 for about an hour!
