Marysville is a city in Michigan's "thumb" area, just across the St. Clair River from Canada. With only 9,959 residents, it's a petite burg when compared to the neighboring community of Port Huron. However, what Marysville lacks in size, it makes up for in scenery. Strolling along the city's riverside boardwalk, residents can take in the sights of blue skies, sparkling water, and foliage blanketing the rocky shoreline. If those residents stop long enough to watch the waves during the coldest months of the year, they might spy the antics of waterfowl like merganser and bufflehead ducks, which spend their winters plying the river's chilly water. Combine these views with a variety of retail and dining establishments, as well as close proximity to the entertainment options of urban areas like Detroit, and you can see why Marysville touts itself, none too humbly, as "The Dream City."

Marysville's Neighborhoods

For the most part, Marysville doesn't have what you would typically consider neighborhoods. Instead, it has small regions that band together to form a few square blocks. For example, along Huron Boulevard and off of M-29, there's the area locally known as the "salt block" because the houses were originally used to accommodate personnel at Morton Salt, one of the community's former employers. Regardless of where you land in Marysville, though, you'll find more than you could have ever bargained for.

Living in Marysville

How much does your spouse love you? Enough to name an entire community after you? Mary Mills' husband did. During the mid-1800s, she moved with her significant other, Nelson, a sawmill operator, to a small settlement in Michigan along the St. Clair River. At first, the community went by the name of "Vicksburg," after the last name of one of its founders. However, Michigan already had another town named Vicksburg, so the second Vicksburg had to change its moniker. (You can probably see where this is going.) After some deliberation, the town's leaders chose the name "Marysville," after Mary Mills. History doesn't say why Mary was the lucky recipient of a namesake settlement, but one can imagine that the fact made for uncomfortable conversations between other husbands and wives in the community. ("Nelson Mills named a town after HIS wife, but I can't even get you to take off your shoes when you walk into the house.")

In the intervening 175 years, Marysville has changed from remote frontier outpost to modern waterside community. In part, that's thanks to the Wills Sainte Claire automobile company, a small-scale manufacturer that produced vehicles in Marysville for six years during the 1920s, and whose founder, C. Harold Wills, helped plan the city. Marysville lacks a downtown area, so the bulk of its stores and restaurants are located along Gratiot Boulevard, a main thoroughfare that angles toward the river. In terms of dining and retail options, Marysville has all the "usual suspects," like McDonald's, Burger King, and Meijer. However, it's also home to a number of locally owned establishments, such as Junction Buoy on the River, which, perhaps not surprisingly, sits on the St. Clair's shores. In addition to restaurants and stores, Marysville residents enjoy the use of a public library, museums, and a community center. Other recreation options include Chrysler Beach and several nature trails. Residents have easy access to all these attractions, either through use of their own vehicles, or through the local Dial-a-Ride bus service. In Port Huron, they can also catch Amtrak trains for excursions farther outside the Marysville limits.
