Welcome to Northfield! This southeastern Minnesota city has a great mix of families and young folks who attend the area’s two liberal arts colleges. Whatever brings you to Northfield, there will be plenty of great apartments for rent to check out here in our nifty little apartment guide.
Northfield is located about 45 miles south of Minneapolis-St. Paul. While not considered part of the MSP metropolitan area, it’s close enough to benefit from proximity to the diversity, entertainment, and cultural amenities of its neighboring large cities.
Not that Northfield doesn’t have its own amenities. The biggest historical event in the city is celebrated every year as part of a large outdoor festival called the Defeat of Jesse James Days. Can you figure out what happened here? We’ll give you a hint. A famous American criminal tried to rob a bank, but was stopped by local armed vigilantes who got wind of the hold up.
Jesse James Days aside, Northfield benefits from the cultural activities of St. Olaf and Carleton Colleges, both of which have a little under 3,000 students annually. If you’ve left your college days behind and you’re more interested in Northfield for its quiet, safe and family-friendly vibe, you’ll find plenty to do in the northern and southern portions of town as well as the city’s 35 parks.
Northfield has a great safety record across most of its neighborhoods. While campus-area neighborhoods may be plagued by slightly higher crime rates and noise disturbances than the northern and southern portions of town, it’s generally nothing to worry too much about.
St. Olaf College hems in downtown Northfield to the west and Carleton College to the east. You’ll find lots of great rentals in these areas—everything from studio apartments to three bedroom rental homes. Many of these apartment rentals will be in old duplexes and divided homes with tons of character, but you can also find the occasional condo and townhome. Because of the student population, you shouldn’t have too much trouble negotiating a short-term lease. Two bedrooms in this area range from $700 to $900.
North and south of town you’ll find more settled, suburban-feeling areas. In these neighborhoods you can find the occasional newer apartment rental, condo and rental home. There has been some new development in apartment rentals particularly to the north, where communities offer amenities such as a gym and clubhouse. Two bedrooms in these regions generally range from $750 to $950.
If you’re moving to Northfield with a four-legged friend, don’t worry! The city’s rental market is very pet friendly. While some newer condos catering to executives have strict anti-pet policies, many of the more relaxed Northfield rentals are both cat and dog friendly. Two paws up!
So welcome to Northfield! Enjoy all that this safe, southern Minnesota community has to offer.
