Indianola has a very close connection to the blues. In fact, famous blues musician, Albert King, lived there, and even references the city in an album he released in 1970 - Indianola Mississippi Seeds.

Situated in Sunflower County, Mississippi, Indianola was originally called 'Indian Bayou' back in 1882 due to its proximity to the riverbank that was once inhabited by an Indian village. As you'd expect, it's pretty flat along the bayou, and hot as well, with summer often growing humid and sticky. The city only has under 11,000 people within its boundaries and contains no transit system. That's OK, though, because it's fairly walkable, and most people work locally, giving them a fairly short commute.

Moving to Indianola

There's good news and bad news if you're thinking of moving to Indianola. The bad news is that the place is mainly comprised of houses, most of them three bedrooms or more. If you're after apartments for rent, you might have trouble finding somewhere suitable. The good news, however, is that the vacancy rate is pretty darn high, sitting at nearly 15%. So, there should be plenty of empty property out there for you to check out if rental houses are more your thing. Another benefit is the cheap cost of real estate, both for buyers and renters. If you work in Greenville or Greenwood (to the west and east, respectively), you might find better-paying work, and the commute isn't too bad. In fact, you can use the money you save on rent to get yourself a nicer car for your daily commute!

Neighborhoods in Indianola

Indianola gives you a pretty simple choice of neighborhoods, as there are only two of them and they're pretty much cut in two by the bayou running through the middle.

City Center: As mentioned, there aren't many apartment buildings with studio apartments for rent in Indianola, but those that are there are found here. Route 82 cuts through the neighborhood, and along it you'll find a few places of interest such as the Indianola shopping center; a few fast food restaurants like Wendy's, McDonald's, and Pizza Hut; and a pretty big Wal-Mart as well. For local amenities and convenience, there's nowhere better.

Kinlock Ave / Roosevelt St: There are more three-four bedroom homes here, so rent is higher on average as a result. If you want a townhouse for rent, this is where you will be be directing your realtor. If you're a keen golfer you'll find Indianola Country Club to the west, while anyone who likes their blues will tend to flock to 308 Blues Club and Cafe.

Living in Indianola

Life in Indianola is quiet, so don't expect anything too exciting. As a small town in the Mississippi Delta, you're going to have to get used to the humidity and the incessant blues music being played through town. If you like that sort of thing, then this might well be the town for you. There are also great transport links in every direction, so if you are commuting for work, you'll be out on the highway nice and quick.
