City Guide for Henderson, NC

Welcome to Henderson! This North Carolina community is a small town in a great location. Let’s get started on the apartment hunt, shall we?

Henderson, with its population of about 16,000, has a decidedly rural, small town feel. However, with its location about 40 miles from the Raleigh-Durham area, you’ll be sure to have access to big city amenities if the quiet country isolation starts to get to you.

With scenic beauty all around it, Henderson is definitely an outdoorsy city. North of the city center you’ll find Kerr Lake State Park, which offers great activities for all sorts of outdoor lovers, including sailing and boating, fishing, camping and waterskiing.

Now the bad news (and I mean very bad news) is that Henderson has an incredibly high number of both violent and property crimes. Okay, don’t strap on your bulletproof vest just yet. Though crime rates are generally high in Henderson, there are a few really great, safe neighborhoods located on the outskirts of the city, away from the high-crime urban areas. Additionally, the cost of living here is low and cheap apartments abound!

You’ll find some of the safest neighborhoods in Henderson to the southeast of the city center. Here there are a few apartment complexes that offer everything from studio apartments to two bedrooms. You’ll also find the occasional rental home and a few apartment rentals in duplexes. Two bedrooms here generally range from $500 to $650.

Northwest of the city center you’ll also find nice, family-friendly communities with a great safety reputation. This area of town tends to feel a bit more rural, but you can find the occasional apartment rental or rental home. Living up north will also put you in close proximity to the lake and recreational areas in the nearby state park. Two bedrooms here range from $600 to $800.

In general, you’ll want to avoid the city center and the urban areas directly north and south of it. Though there are small pockets of safe, desirable areas in these neighborhoods, the crime statistics will probably make it too dangerous to take advantage of.

As an outdoorsy city, many apartment rentals in Henderson will be both cat and dog-friendly. Though there may be size or breed limitations in some apartment complexes, the Henderson apartment market is generally quite pet-friendly.

So welcome to Henderson! Enjoy all that this small North Carolina city has to offer. View Henderson City Guide
