Marion is the county seat of the County of McDowell in North Carolina. It was built near Buck Creek, on the land around the historic Carson House in 1844. The town was named for the American Revolutionary War Hero, Brigadier General Francis Marion. The Brigadier General was nicknamed the "Swamp Fox" because of his unique tactics in guerrilla warfare during service with the South Carolina militia and the Continental Army. The Mel Gibson character in the movie the Patriot was based upon his life.
