South Hooksett is a census-designated area within the city of Hooksett, covering just 5.3 square miles and home to 5,418 residents as of the 2010 census. Nestled between the Merrimack River and Massabesic Lake and just minutes north of New Hampshire's largest city, Manchester, South Hooksett and its sister-town Hooksett have made recent moves to preserve historic districts in this growing area. Population growth, however, is far below the national average, and this could be due to the fact that the vacancy rate hovers somewhere around zero. No kidding.
Don't let the low vacancy rate scare you. It's not that there isn't housing for rent in South Hooksett. There is, but home rentals don't stay on the market for long. If you're fortunate to find a place, be ready to act fast. That means being prepared with the first month's rent, a security deposit, proof of income, and rental references in hand when you meet the leasing agent or property owner. Most of the properties in South Hooksett are single-family homes, so if you're looking for a 1 bedroom apartment within an apartment complex, you're going to have to look to the south in Manchester, or across the river in Hooksett.
South Hooksett itself is, in a sense, a single neighborhood in the city of Hooksett, so it's not really divided into smaller 'hoods. For simplicity's sake when it comes to commuting, try to find something convenient to Interstate 93, which easily takes you north into Concord or south into Manchester. Walk scores are very low for most properties in the area, so you and your car may become best friends.
South Hooksett doesn't cover a large area of land within the City of Hooksett, and much of it is residential or wooded. If you're looking for dining or shopping, your best bet will be along Hooksett Road in the center of town. There, you'll find several (but not millions) of dining options, ranging from standard fast-food fare to various ethnic and American-style restaurants. Chantilly's Restaurant and Pub on the south end of Hooksett Road has a popular weekend breakfast buffet, served all the way until 1 p.m., and is home to most of the area's nightlife with everyone's favorite activity: Saturday night karaoke. Oh, yeah.
Space Entertainment Center on Zapora Road has a little something for everyone: billiards, laser tag, ping pong, bumper cars, and even an indoor roller coaster and carousel. There's an arcade with over 100 games, and Frankie's Grill, where you can wash down the best burgers in town with an ice-cold brew (or two).
There is a Kmart and a Dollar Tree, also on Hooksett Road, but for more shopping options, take I-93 across the Merrimack River and you'll find large shopping centers just minutes away. North on Hooksett, you'll find New England's favorite discount shop, Ocean State Job Lot. It's so popular, it's been immortalized by a poem of the same name by Stephen Burt, who won a Pushcart Prize for the little ditty in 2012. South Hooksett is also just minutes away from Manchester, New Hampshire's largest city, if you need to get your urban on.
