North Haledon: A passage to freedom. North Haledon is home to Maynard House, which was built in 1802 as a stagecoach stop and is now a popular historical site. The house also served as a safe house and station along the Underground Railroad.
North Haledon is a quiet borough tucked away in the mountains and hills Passaic County. It's a nice secluded area away from much of the hustle and bustle that goes on in busier shopping districts in Bergen County. According to the 2010 census, the population in North Haledon was estimated at 8,417. This wooded community stretches over about three and a half miles.
Moving to North Haledon
Two things to consider prior to your move to North Haledon are definitely the cost of living and rent, which happen to be higher here than in most other Passaic County suburbs. If you were thinking about a finding a home for rent, consider renting an apartment instead to keep your costs lower. There are a number of 2 bedroom apartments available for rent in North Haledon. If you need more space, there are also some single-family house rental properties available. You probably won't find a studio apartment here as the majority of the residences are larger in size, but you might get lucky if you start looking early enough.
Most residents in North Haledon are car-dependent since the area is fairly well spread out. In general, the town woodsy and there are a lot of hills so trying to walk around the neighborhood to complete errands may be a bit of a challenge. Commuters who choose to get to work via mass transit usually rely on the bus lines and stops throughout town. If you're commuting by car to a job closer to home, you'll usually be traveling along I-287, the major highway nearest North Haledon.

The local government is pretty active in North Haledon, and it regularly hosts events for residents. Examples of these include the community shred event, passport-renewal sessions, blood pressure clinics, and other similar events. The town website also publicizes school events by posting dates and times for school performances so that everyone can stay up-to-date and attend.
Education in North Haledon
The school districts here have a great reputation and are known for well preparing their students for higher learning. There is an active drama and music program here, and the borough does have its own library which is a great resource for young learners. Many high school graduates look into attending William Paterson University, which is a large, well-respected school within easy commuting distance.
Staying in Shape
Fitness is a big thing in North Haledon, and the city boasts a good number of resources residents rely on to stay in shape. The city is home to a number of yoga studios, as well as karate, general fitness, and personal training studios-perfect if you want to kick some butt or just feel the burn! North Haledon is also home to the Buehler Cultural Center and Pool, where you can go during the summer and get some laps in (or just soak up the sun, if you're feeling less energetic.)
If you want to take a nice nature walk, a quick drive to the neighboring town of Hawthorne can get you to Goffle Brook Park, a beautiful recreational area with a duck pond, waterfall, and well-maintained paths ideal for a leisurely stroll. If you're looking to get some intense hiking in or really just want to get out of the city for the day, hop onto I-287 and head toward Skyline Drive. Once you're in the area of Skyline Drive and Ringwood (no more than a fifteen to twenty minute drive), you'll have access to a number of stunningly beautiful trails, including parts of the Appalachian Trail.

There are a number of well-known restaurants worth trying out in North Haledon. There is not a lot of local shopping in the North Haledon area, but if you want to visit a major shopping center, Willowbrook Mall is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from you, and provides access to a great selection of brand-name shops and smaller local boutiques. If you feel like getting out for the night, drive over to the Hawthorne Theater, a small, privately-owned movie theater that shows all the latest blockbusters. After the movie, be sure to stop at Portofino or walk around the Diamond Bridge Ave Area to get a nighttime snack or a quick bite to eat at one of the locally-owned eateries in the area.
