Neighborhoods in South River
There are no bad areas to live in South River, but there is a range of prices depending on location. South River has three main neighborhoods, each with interesting local flavor and traditional hangouts.
Whitehead Avenue / Kamm Avenue: This area in the southernmost part of South River is the most expensive when it comes to buying real estate, but it also has the largest units available. Even though it is expensive for the U.S. as a whole, it still has some of the more reasonably priced rental homes in the state. The arts are well represented in this area, with the Ballroom Dream Dance Studio offering a variety of lessons.
Main Street / Ferry Street: Here are the most expensive rental units, in large part due to the plentiful water access. This area enjoys miles of riverbank along the South River, making watersports and fishing a part of daily life for many residents.
Borough Center: For smaller units, Borough Center is the best area to look. Most of the rental properties here are one- and two-bedroom apartments. Bissett's Recreation Area offers locals a great place to enjoy the outdoors, play on the water and rest and recharge at the end of a busy week.

That is well below the national average, and in many cases, locals walk or bike to work. Owning a car is still a good idea, particularly since the entire area tends to migrate down on the shore during the summers, but you might luck into a job that is well within comfortable walking distance.
