The narrow streets lined with trees and named after Civil War generals like Grant and Sheridan only attest to the historical richness of Congers. The Last Chance Salon, made of brick, was built in 1867 and still marvels both the residents and the locals. Its location on Lake Road, which is the main street of the business district, makes Congers look more like a setting of a Western movie.
Congers' first name was Cedar Grove Corner, later changed to Waldberg, which means "forest mountain" in German. Today, there are nine structures in Congers that have history dating back to the 18th century! These structures include the DeBaum House that is located on Kings Highway, the Smith house located on Gilchrest Road and also the Snedeker House. The commander-in-chief, George Washington (maybe you've heard of him?), was believed to have spent the night at the Snedeker House. Clarkstown first Catholic Church was built in 1890s and it is still in existence today. View Congers City Guide
