"I've been everywhere, man / I've been everywhere, man / Crossed the desert's bare, man / I've breathed the mountain air, man / Of travel I've had my share, man / I've been everywhere / I've been to... Haverstraw!" From I've Been Everywhere by Johnny Cash
Haverstraw is a unique town in Rockland County, New York, that actually contains three villages and several hamlets; one of these is called Haverstraw. The name of the town came from a similar Dutch word that means "oat straw," which refers to the type of grass that grows here along the river to the north of town. Want to hear a cool bit of history? It was here that Benedict Arnold brought Major Andre to surrender West Point to the British for 20,000 pounds during the American Revolutionary War! Obviously, it didn't work out quite that way.
