Herkimer is a village in Herkimer County, New York, that was settled before the American Revolutionary War. In the 18th century, German settlement on the plateaus of the area had outsiders calling it the "German Flats." Later, residents were called "Herkimer Jerkimers." All in fun, we are assured! Today, the village is home to just under 8000 people, none of which are self-described as "Jerkimers" in any context.

As for shopping, you've got the Sears Hometown Store, Army and Navy, Wal-Mart Supercenter, Dollar Tree, Kmart and several auto repair and supply shops. Most thing you'll need during your first year in Herkimer, you can find right within the village limits.
Dining Out
It doesn't matter how awesome a new town can seem; if there is nothing good to eat, your home is no better than a run-down shack in the woods, encircled with rabbit traps and some rough-looking lettuce plants. Fortunately, there are plenty of things to eat in Herkimer! Try out Salvatore's Pizza, the Waterfront Grill, the sirloin tips at Ponderosa Steakhouse and the Chinese food at New Foo Chow. Not enough?
