The city of Johnstown (once known as John's Town) takes its name from the son of its founder Sir William Johnson. A trader who built close relationships with community leaders, Johnson established his city and went on to become one of the most influential citizens in New York's history and a successful businessman.
Today, Johnstown is part of Fulton County and has a population of 8,743 residents. The city is surrounded by the town, also called Johnstown -- this can sometimes be a source of confusion for visitors -- and lies around 45 miles from Albany. Whilst the city's residents were once mostly employed in the thriving glove and leather industries here, today you're more likely to find those living here working in the local offices or shops. One glove manufacturer remains in the city as well as a couple of tanners and a few leather dealers -- if you're looking for high-quality leather goods, Johnstown is definitely the place be!
Moving to Johnstown
Johnstown is just a short distance from the State Capital of Albany, and the real estate market here is thriving. Compared to many parts of New York, the cost of living here in Fulton County is relatively low -- around 10% lower than the U.S. average!
Vacation Hotspot
Fulton County is home to 44 lakes and people have been vacationing here since the 1930s. Lakefront properties have seen a surge in popularity in recent years, with many people choosing them for year-round living. Seasonal homes near the lake are still a draw for holidaymakers today, but you'll find people fall in love with the scenery and relaxed pace of life here and are increasingly using their properties as permanent residences.
Too Much Choice?
To say you'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to housing options in Johnstown is a bit of an understatement to say the least! The options are as numerous as the lakes themselves, so whether you're in the market for a million dollar mansion, seasonal hunting lodge or one-bedroom apartments for rent in Johnstown, you're sure to find it. Whilst there are generally more family homes than apartment complexes in the area, the variety of properties on offer is pretty diverse, so finding pet-friendly apartments or condos for rent shouldn't be too much of an issue provided you put in some effort!
Tis the season for house hunting
Whilst you can search for your dream condo any day of the year in Johnstown, it's generally a good idea to shy away from peak season. Seriously; tourists flocking to the Adirondack Mountains doesn't make for a relaxing week of apartment hunting -- take our word for it! Far better to arrive off season -- spring or fall are both great times to visit the city, and you should allow yourself at least a couple of weeks to organize a rental.

Johnstown doesn't have any specific neighborhoods as such although the city is roughly divided into two areas -- choose where you live wisely as each has its own unique feel:
City Center: Here you'll find a variety of types of housing, from three- and four-bedroom family homes to studio and two-bedroom apartments -- there's a good mix of owners and renters. The city center has a historic feel, with many buildings dating back to the early 1900s and a range of independent shops and eateries. A popular spot for dining is Johnstown Hall Inn, dating back to the 1700s - it's a great place to enjoy a margarita or European-style food with a French twist. The city center is filled with interior design stores and gift shops; check out Adirondack Annie & Co on W. Main Street!
Glebe Street / Comrie Avenue: You'll generally find three- to four-bedroom homes here although there are also a number of apartment complexes. Residents living in the area flock to the thrift stores here for some of the best vintage finds around, and Peebles Department Store is also a popular choice for shopping. If it's cafes and restaurants you're looking for, one of the best steakhouses in town is here but casual dining options are also available with Wendy's and Burger King nearby.
