Lake Mohegan is actually a part of the town of Yorktown in Westchester County in upstate New York, but it seems like a separate little town. It is a semi-rural area, and is relatively near the Peekskill ski area, as well as being near the foothills of the Catskill mountains for quick day trips. If you love the outdoors and winter sports as well as water sports in the summer, Lake Mohegan fits the bill. It also retains some small town charm that is lacking in larger areas, along with a slower pace of life and plentiful wildlife.
Moving to Lake Mohegan
Moving to Lake Mohegan should be a relatively easy process. The biggest decision will be whether a lakefront or lake view is on your must-have list. After that, you can begin your search for home rentals or luxury apartments, or maybe even 1 bedroom apartments on a month to month basis. All of these rental types are available, depending upon your requirements and your budget. It is New York, so it's expensive! There are single family residences available, even lakefront, if you are willing and able to pony up the money required. Well-equipped and laid out townhouses and other condominiums are available throughout the area. There are also apartment complexes available lakefront. The Landing on Mohegan Lake provides access to the lake for water sports like kayaking and boating. The complex also offers a swimming pool, fitness center, and tennis courts for an active lifestyle. Closer to the Taconic Parkway and Route 6, Woodland Manor apartments offer a quick trip by car to New York City, though not the amenities of the lakefront digs. There are also townhouses and single-family homes for rent; you should probably weigh the decision whether to buy or rent one of these, as your monthly outlay could be considerably less if you purchase.
Neighborhoods in Lake Mohegan
Most of the activity and the homes in Lake Mohegan center around the lake; this is called the Lake District. Most of the shopping in the area is in the eastern section of town near the mall and parkway. The southern section of town is a quicker commute to New York City and commands a premium in terms of monthly rent or purchase prices of dwellings.
Living in Lake Mohegan
If you enjoy skiing and snowshoeing, there are large parks and DEP properties all over Westchester County that provide pretty landscapes and recreational areas. For shopping, there are restaurants, groceries, box stores, and Cortlandt Town Center, a small mall near the Taconic Parkway and Rt. 6. St. George's Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. Bikers will enjoy the North County Trailway in the area, and many roads in the area are bike-friendly -- just be sure to wear a helmet!
Sadly, there's no public transportation available to get around the area, and with walk scores between 29 and 45, most errands do require a car (or a nice big basket on your bike!). There is a train that runs through town to take people into New York City. With the Big Apple just an hour away, you'll never have to decide between big-city living and the quiet life!
