This "Star of the North" village and America's snowmobile capital was once home to well-known children's author, Laura Ingalls Wilder. The Malone Middle School formed the basis for the Franklin Academy that Ingalls' character, Almanzo Wilder, attends in her novel, "Farmer Boy," published in 1933. Almanzo is Ingalls Wilder's husband's name and the story is inspired by his childhood in Malone.

The village of Malone, population of about 5,911, is the Franklin County seat and located within the town of Malone. The two Malones often get confused, but at least they share the same county, so it's pretty much all "no harm, no foul." The Franklin County area is in the North Country, which is just a mere 10 miles from the American-Canadian border and right smack in the desirable Adirondack region of New York. It's no wonder that many vacationers want to live here -- can't you just picture the perfect Malone home with a couple of Adirondack chairs in your yard?
Moving to Malone
You can find Adirondack furniture stores, craft shops, clothing boutiques, small grocery stores and restaurants in the downtown area of Malone. There are loft-style premier apartments over some of these commercial spaces, which tend to be renovated two-bedroom apartments. If you start your search off the main drag there are less ritzy, but still desirable, three-bedroom houses for rent. What's really unique about Malone, and a big plus for those looking for a house rent, is that roughly half of the houses here tend to be rented out.
What's the Cost?
More positive news for renters looking for houses in Malone is that rents are often lower here in comparison with other parts of upstate New York. It seems heading north might be a direction that's easy on the part of the budget earmarked for house rent.
What's the Catch?
Despite a tendency for rents lower that the state average, studio apartments are very limited here and even one-bedroom apartments for rent can be scarce. The most common rental unit in Malone by far is the three-bedroom apartment, townhouse or house, but some two and 4+ bedroom rentals do exist and can be found by acting fast.
What's the Solution?
Start home searching asap and have your credit history, proof of income and security deposit ready. Also consider the time of year to plan your move as winter tends to bring a lot of snow with it to Malone. It's much more fun to enjoy snowboarding, skiing or snowman building at Titus Mountain than deal with a moving truck and unpack freezing packing boxes!
Malone Neighborhoods
The tiny village of Malone is pretty much its own neighborhood. Main Street marks the downtown section where many rentals can be found. There are some newer luxury lofts over the shops here that are mostly pricier two-bedroom apartment units. For more affordable three-bedroom rental options as well as one-bedroom apartments for rent, try the Falling Leaf Drive area.
Living in Malone
When you've found the Malone home of your dreams, celebrate by heading outdoors for some fun. Just as Titus Mountain is the place to be for winter sports, in the summer it's Malone Memorial Recreation Park for swimming and picnics. Although you can easily walk around the village, many households here have one or two vehicles to drive to cities and rural areas outside of the area. The best part of venturing out is getting back again to the home you've made in Malone!
