Situated on an idyllic stretch of the pristine Delaware River, Port Jervis took on its current name in 1853 when it was officially incorporated as a village (later to be upgraded to a city). It became well established, economically viable and well known in southeastern New York state as a result of the creation of the Delaware and Hudson Rivers Canal.
