Southport, New York, is a small town located in Chemung County. Although the first settlers came to the area in 1788, Southport was not officially established until 1822. Southport is about two and a half hours inland from Lake Erie and roughly four hours from New York City. This area is known for its lush river valleys and hilly upland areas. According to the 2010 census, the population in this area was roughly 10,940 and is not growing very quickly.
Whether you're looking for recreational activities or peaceful country living, you'll find it in Southport. This area is rich with rivers and parks, and property rentals in Southport are cheap and easy to find. Since housing isn't in high demand here, you don't need to start looking a year in advance -- just make sure to leave yourself enough time to find something you love. Before you make your move, consider where you'd like to be. It's possible to find rental property down in the river valley where you'll be surrounded by a lush green landscape and miles of walking trails. Or, if that's not your thing, you can seek out historic homes in the Bulkhead section of town or a country abode in the hills.
Depending upon what you're looking for, renting in the Southport area should be an easy endeavor. In general, rental homes are a bit harder to find around here than apartments -- if you have your heart set on a homestead, you may find yourself spending more time searching. Apartments, on the other hand, are plentiful.
What You'll Need
In order to expedite the rental process and get into the place you want, make sure you have all the needed paperwork on hand. You'll want a photo ID, a breakdown of your rental history, references and some sort of proof of income, like a pay stub or bank statement.
