Home, Sweet Home
In many ways, Austintown is very much the perfect, rural college town, and it's definitely one that lets students explore woods and waterholes alike. Even if you somehow reach that point where you feel like you’ve taken it all in, the Canadian border is only a four-hour drive along the stunning banks of Lake Erie. But if border-hopping isn’t your thing, wait around for just a minute because suburban life is about to get a whole lot more exciting: Austintown residents are anxiously anticipating the 2014 opening of their racetrack-casino (or racino) which will provide both hours upon hours of messy, adrenaline-fueled excitement and a sweet half-million dollars’ worth of profit in its second year alone. And for this bucolic Columbus suburb, a gambling goldmine like that could truly put it on the map.
Money in the Bank
So why not hop in before it’s too hot? Living in Austintown is already wildly affordable. This burb's cost of living, for example, is 17.5 percent lower than the national average. And as its entertainment market begins to boom, it’s only going to get more expensive to get in on the fun. A two bedroom apartment is generally going to run you less than $600 per month, and if you’re savvy, can even be netted for a low $500. But be warned: if you’re looking for that magic apartment where all utilities are paid, get ready to really step up your budget by (gasp) $60! Pure robbery, right? Jokes aside, if you’re looking to really have space to spread out and maybe even have a room where you can finally put up a flat screen TV, a three bedroom home can be rented for under $700 a month. With prices like that, the American dream suddenly doesn’t feel so far away.
Meanwhile, a Short Drive Away...
Austintown is just under 12 square miles, so at that size, there’s really no need for a subway system. A car will serve you well, as Ohio State Route 11, Interstate 680, and interstate 80 all pass through the town and can take you anywhere you need to go. Head out on a little day drive and swing by some of the beautiful parks Austintown maintains. Its pride and joy, the Austintown Township Park, clocks in at 206 acres and contains a sand volleyball court, basketball courts, baseball fields, and playgrounds. It even offers outdoor concerts every Tuesday night from 7:00 PM to 8:30PM, featuring some of the best local music the town has brewing. As if that weren’t enough, the town is home to an additional four parks, including the 17-acre Wedgewood Park, which contain gorgeous streams, paths where your pooch can walk sans leash, and hiking trails that show off the scenic, central American views of northern Ohio.
Whatcha Waiting For?
Surely, with the promise of the racino looming on the horizon, anyone with 20 bucks to blow will have heard of Austintown within a year, but this picturesque little town has so much more than just entertainment up its sleeve. Affordable homes, quality higher education, and sprawling, thriving parks are the real, classic staples of this cozy little suburb. So, with your next move, why wouldn’t you take a gamble on Austintown?
