The city of Ironton, Ohio, has proudly hosted the longest continuously running annual Memorial Day parade in our nation since 1868.
Ironton is the county seat of Lawrence County, Ohio, and is included in the Huntington, W.Va., and Ashland, Ky., Metropolitan Statistical Area along the scenic Ohio River. With a population of 11,129 at the time of the 2010 Census, Ironton is a small town within a highly populated metro area of more than 363,000 people. Founded in 1849, the city gained its name and income from manufacturing pig iron, as the area's nearby hills contained stores of iron ore.
Pig iron is simply "crude iron produced in a blast furnace and poured into molds in preparation for making wrought iron, steels, and alloys," and Ironton's high-quality production and easy access to the Ohio River allowed the city to become a worldwide supplier, particularly for constructing strong wartime ships. Created in 1919, the Ironton Tanks were among the first professional football teams in the country. The team went proudly undefeated in 1922. With strong football roots, it's no wonder the city has produced an array of notable talents in the sport, including coach Bob Lutz and players Coy Bacon and George McAfee.
