Harleysville -- Home to the renowned annual Heckler Fest at Heckler Plains!
Harleysville isn't actually a town unto itself, but a census-designated place within the Lower Salford Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It was settled by the Pennsylvania Dutch in the 18th century, and named after Samuel Harley. More than 9,000 people live in this community today. There's even an annual Apple Butter Frolic! It doesn't get much more countrified than this, folks.
Utilities
Harleysville doesn't have its own municipal government, so for public services like sewer, water, trash, and recycling, you'll have to talk to the staff at the Lower Salford Township offices. Although they'll provide you with recycling bins and trash bins, the Town isn't actually responsible for hauling away your rubbish -- check out private haulers like King Can LLC or Waste Management to sign up for regular collection where you live. Yeah, it's a little weird, but the job gets done!
Transportation
This community isn't much for public transportation, either, so you'll definitely need a car to get around. Even if you're planning to work locally, it's still best to own your own vehicle when it comes time to bring home groceries or travel to other communities for other apple-related events.
Rental Condos and Houses
Most of the apts for rent in Harleysville sport two to three bedrooms for a really decent price. There are a couple of rental condos, but these tend to offer less space for more money -- of course, the buildings are little more updated than those with lower rental rates. Looking for some yard space? You can find townhouses in Harleysville that offer up to 9,000 square feet of lot space -- awesome for a puppy to run around on!
There are three main neighborhoods in this community, each with different homes, costs and characteristics. Search for apartments near one of the community parks for some extra green space, or choose an apartment for rent on the outskirts of Harleysville for a little more space between you and your neighbors.
Town Center: This is the heart of Harleysville, with the most access to local businesses and amenities. Housing costs, although low for the town, are more expensive than over 70% of the neighborhoods in Pennsylvania. Here you will find the Harleysville Community Center Park and the Courtyard at the Ridge of Peter Becker.
Vernfield: Vernfield is just northeast of the Town Center, with home values pretty much on part with the latter. You'll find medium-size homes here, as well as a few larger ones. Vernfield is home to the Giant Food grocery store, Zach's Pizza and JJ Asian Cuisine.
Lederach: This neighborhood borders the Town Center and Vernfield to the west and south, and is the largest community within Harleysville. Home listings here are generally more expensive than over 80% of American communities, however the rental fees are not really any higher than those in Vernfield or the Town Center. Most houses were built between 1970 and 2000, but many are newer than that. Lederach is home to the Alvin C. Alderfer Recreation Area, several pizza places and Wing Night at the Harleysville Hotel.
This is a pretty conservative community, so if you're looking for a party town, keep moving! If you're into cute apple festivals, horses pulling wagons and generations-old recipes, however, Harleysville is totally for you!
When it comes to stocking up your fridge and pantry, it doesn't really get any better than produce from the local Living Hope Farm. Here, you can feel good about what you're eating and support your neighbors -- the farmers -- at the same time.
Not into cooking? No big deal, there are plenty of restaurant chefs who would love to do it for you. Check out the sweet potato fries at the American Parkside Grille, or drop by for some Italian at Brazzo Italian Cuisine.
