The city of Lock Haven is no fly-by-night place without a sense of its history! Lock Haven prides itself on having three heritage sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The sites include Water Street District, for its exceptional architecture; Memorial Park, a high value archaeological site; and the Heisey House, a museum exhibiting Victorian-era artifacts.
Officially incorporated as a City of the Third Class in 1870, Lock Haven is located on the banks of Bald Eagle Creek and the western part of the Susquehanna River. It is home to 9,149 people and covers an area of 2.3 square miles, making it the largest in Clinton County. Its transformation to what it is today began in the early 18th Century as a timber town. During those days, Lock Haven was a major transit hub for trekkers, loggers and boatmen passing through on the West Branch Canal. The municipality plays the role of county seat in Clinton County.
