An old mining town in the Pennsylvania Appalachians, Tamaqua is a town with plenty of history behind it, that is slowly growing into the new century. Old veins run deep, in the ground as well as in town, with coal families extending back centuries still making up much of the population. This has lead to a community that is very close, but that is also welcoming to new faces.

Moving to Tamaqua

Sitting in the midst of the Pennsylvania mountains, on the edge of the Poconos, Tamaqua gets pretty frigid during the winter, so pack your heavy clothing. Summer is not too bad and unlike the lower parts of the state, it actually gets all four seasons. Check out the weatherproofing and windows on any duplexes for rent you look at to make sure that your heating bill won't get too high over the winter.

The good news is that the cost of living in Tamaqua is pretty low and finding rental apartments in Tamaqua isn't too difficult the town has a good number of rental units and there are almost always vacancies. This means that you don't need much lead time to find a home for rent and you won't need to save up all that much for a security deposit.

Neighborhoods

As far as neighborhoods go, there are no real significant differences. But here's a list of what's out there in Tamaqua.

Downtown: This neighborhood tends to be in the mid-range of the area, with mainly apartments and townhouses for rent. There are some handy businesses nearby, meaning that you can sometimes walk to where you need to go. You'll also find great food choices such as Tamaqua Diner and Luigi's.

East End: Moving a bit out of Downtown, you have the East End, which is almost solely residential and has more single homes and apartment buildings.

Outlying Areas: Beyond that, you're out in the rural area almost everything outside of town is owner occupied, so you'll likely only be able to find the stray single-family home for rent.

Living in Tamaqua

Downtown Tamaqua is coming back, with major redevelopment and growth to revitalize the town. This includes the restoration of the Tamaqua Train Station, the development of Depot Park and the updating of facades throughout the downtown. Unfortunately, the town is still in the process of attracting business, so you'll need to head out of town for shopping and restaurants for the most part. The choice of options is fairly limited as well, as the local taste buds haven't developed much beyond the odd Chinese restaurant or taco joint.

Tamaqua is a great spot for fans of the great outdoors, so lace up some hiking boots and get out in the nearby hills and mountains. There is some good hunting as well, during the seasons. There's also fishing and kayaking in the nearby reservoirs, such as Owl Creek. It you'd rather spend your time indoors, Tamaqua is working on growing the artistic community, starting with the Tamaqua Community Arts Center that provides classes and performances throughout the week, year-round.

If you can get a four-wheel drive vehicle, that's your best bet because the winters can get really nasty, but you'll absolutely need a vehicle of some sort. There's no public transportation available and unless you live smack in the middle of town, the town isn't very walkable. You might be able to get away with a bicycle during the summers, but definitely not in the ferocious Pocono winters.
