With over 20,000 residents in one lake, fun activities are within easy access no matter how you get to the destinations. You'll find shopping and eating options wherever you go, with just a little planning along the way. Thanks to a lower crime rate than Seattle, it's no wonder the local residents feel safe living on the island. The island is 5 miles long and 2 miles wide, which is a small area in which to find housing. Since you won't have as many options as you would in a big city,  start looking at least six months before moving to the area. Well, unless you want to be homeless when you get here, then take your time!

Watch 'Em Go By

Take the bus when you have the time, and just sit and watch apartments go by with big "FOR RENT" signs acting as beacons. Don't worry, as long as you bring a book you won't look too creepy. If you see an amazing place, just get off the bus, grab the number for the listing, and give them a call. If it's a bust, just get back on the next bus!

Word of Mouth

When you see a great place, instead of keeping it a secret, let everyone know! It might not be the perfect place for you, and if it helps out a friend it'll inspire them to pay you back. Besides, who couldn't use a little good karma in their life? 

Preparation For Your Home

Have a copy of your credit report while preparing the applications forms. Seriously, if you wait too long, someone else might snag up your dream spot. Additionally, have at least the first month's and last month's rent available in your savings. Even if it's all you've got, you're going to need it to assure the landlord you're the right one for the apartment. After all, with the beautiful apartments you're going to have to choose from, you'll begin to truly understand why cash is king. 

This area is hot, so expect them to want a credit check. The nicer landlords may pay the cost themselves, otherwise expect a $30-40 dollar charge in addition to your application. Don't worry, this isn't a scam (unless it's a really lame one). To put the sugar on top, make sure to have a demonstration of your current employment. Whether it's current pay stubs or even a letter from your boss, you'll be glad you proved you're not a bum.

Parking

In most cases, apartments in Mercer Island would have parking within the property. On moments where there’s none, you could try to convince your landlord to open up a spot in your building (if it has any).

Ditch the Vehicle

The public transportation system in the King County is very reliable to ride on. There’s no need for a car unless you work in an occupation that require it or that involve transporting large items to more than one destination. You also have the bus, train or cab to rely on for traveling for work or personal reasons.

Cycling and Trails are FREE

Seriously, why spend money if you don't have to? Well, unless you like showing off. Mercer Island has some of the best parks in the state, though, so you'd be a fool not to take a moment to enjoy them from time to time.
