Located about 100 miles from Sioux Falls, Watertown has small town charm with the convenience of suburban development. You’ll find shopping, dining, and entertainment in the city’s chain stores and restaurants, as well as the Watertown mall, located in the eastern portion of the city. If you’re more interested in local charm, the city also has several independently owned establishments.
Despite its development, Watertown remains a friendly, community-oriented place. The economy is sustained by manufacturing jobs, and many of the local attractions cater to families. Young singles may have a hard time finding like-minded folks, but if all else fails a quick drive to Sioux Falls will perk you up.
As the city is surrounded by tons of lakes and natural attractions, it’s no surprise that Terry Redlin, one of America’s best-known wildlife painters, was born and raised in Watertown. The Redlin Art Center, located in the eastern portion of town, is home to over 150 original works by this prolific artist. Want to paint some landscapes of your own? Just outside of the city limits you’ll find several scenic lakes and parks that are not only great inspiration, but great for recreational activities as well.
The best part about Watertown may be the low cost of living. With average rent for two bedroom apartments peaking at about $700, you’ll have no trouble finding tons of cheap apartments for rent in almost any neighborhood in town.
Between the city center and US 81, you’ll find a fairly safe neighborhood saturated with cheap apartments. Many of these complexes have well-maintained studios, one bedrooms, and two bedroom apartments for rent. Prices in this area generally range from $450 - $650.
East of this pocket of apartment dwellers, you’ll find more suburban, family-friendly neighborhoods with great safety records. While there isn’t much in terms of large apartment complexes in this area, you can usually find rental homes and duplexes for rent throughout this section of town. Two bedroom rental properties here range from $500 - $700, and frequently come with washer and dryer hook ups and large yards.
Living west of the city center, in the North Shore neighborhood, will put you in close proximity to area lakes and outdoor recreation. While there aren’t as many rental properties in this area as neighborhoods to the east, you can occasionally find houses for rent here. Two bedroom rental homes are of a similar price to eastern suburban neighborhoods.
If you’re relocating to Watertown with a four-legged friend, allow yourself plenty of time to find a pet friendly rental. Though many Watertown rental properties are both cat and dog friendly, some may require an additional pet deposit.
