Milan, TN: Home to the Milan Army Ammunition Plant.
Forget about Milan, Italy. You can have your own Milan experience right here in the country. Of course, we're talking about Milan, Tennessee. You know, that 8.9 square mile stretch of land that's home to 7,851 people and Milan Army Ammunition Plant. Yes, that Milan. Dig in as we go over some essentials to make the move as painless as possible.
Okay, so you're still in the U.S.; but Milan has the tendency to do its own thing (perhaps that has a lot to do with the fact that no highway traverses around the city). So let's lay down some groundwork, shall we?
Let's Talk About Rates
If you're from Memphis or somewhere where rental money is serious money, you've got every reason to rejoice in this city. Rental rates are low compared to the rest of the state and the country. So yes, you have the bragging rights of living in a two-bedroom apartment for rent in Milan for the price of coffee money in LA. Typically, like most lease agreements, you'll be required to pay advance rent and security deposit fee, which is usually equal to a month's rent.
What's on the Market?
Aside from three-bedroom houses, which pretty much dominate the real estate property market in this city, you get a mix of condo rentals, mobile houses, apartment complexes and townhomes as options, too. A lot of these homes look pretty much like they come from your parents' era, so you have to take the time and view the properties before putting your name on that lease agreement.
How Soon to Start Hunting?
While there are not many rabid renters out to compete with you, you need to give yourself at least a month before your scheduled move. (Property viewing, remember?) Just in case you get a glimpse of your dream apartment, make sure to have your picture ID, proof of employment / income and rental history / reference with you to stake a claim on that apartment right away.
You have to live in the right neighborhood to live comfortably. For this reason, take the time to get familiar with Milan's different areas and their distinct characteristics.
City Center: The center of action in Milan, the City Center is home to single detached houses, some apartment buildings and complexes. So yes, if you're living solo, one of the area's one-bedroom apartment would make an excellent crib. Though this is the hub, this area is not walkable. This neighborhood is home to Trostel Field, Milan General Hospital, shops and diners.
Graball: Unless you like living in the middle of nowhere and stretches of open space are all you have for neighbors, you wouldn't choose to live here. This is home to Milan Country Club and Milan Army Ammunition Plant, but no housing.
Cades / Concord: This neighborhood is home to farms, mobile houses and a wealth of places to live in for renters. Although it's far from being a walkable area, this is home to many parks and establishments like Milan City Park, Mildred G. Fields Memorial Library, West Tennessee Agricultural Museum, and Johnnie Hale Stadium.
The city of Milan is brimming with history. In fact, four landmarks are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places: Milan Post Office, the Browning House, Gibson County Training House, and Union Central School. If you are a history buff you could visit these places some time and down some historical trivia to have a feel of your new home.
Sports is something that could make locals go buzzing with excitement. The Milan Bulldogs are the local heroes of this city, having won seven State Championships. If you like to have a taste of some local sports, head over to Johnnie Hale Stadium and join the mob scene there when the Bulldogs are in action. In addition, residents get to play their favorite sports at Milan City Park.
If you're like a moth who can't stay away from big city lights, you can always drive over to Memphis, which is just over an hour's drive away. But before you go thinking of heading that way, come over and get yourself a place to call home first. Have fun in your search!
