The city of Fredericksburg is the seat of Gillespie County, in Texas. It has been recognized as the Peach Capital of Texas, though there are also a multitude of herb and lavender farms in the area, and viticulture proliferates. The reason why these particular crops do so well in Fredericksburg is in-part due to the lovely light, sandy soils, together with the idyllic climate, which is semi-arid, where the summers are hot, and the winters remain mild on the whole. The city is located around 63 miles north of San Antonio, and approximately 67 miles west of Austin. The population is approximately 10,500, according to the census carried out in 2010.

Those who need to commute further afield for work are well served in terms of the road network. U.S. Highway 290 travels east to west across Texas, and directly through the heart of the city. U.S. Highway 87 heads north-south, beginning near the Gulf Coast and journeys through San Antonio to the New Mexico border, connecting to U.S. Highway 290 near Fredericksburg. Gillespie County Airport is located only 2 miles from downtown Fredericksburg.
The National Museum of the Pacific War on East Main St which was formerly called the Nimitz Museum, after Fleet Admiral Chester William Nimitz, is the United States' only museum that is centered on the Pacific campaign during WWII. Well worthy of a visit, particularly if you covet 20th century North American history. Following on from a stop-off at the National Museum of the Pacific War, if you're a real down-and-dirty history buff, then you might well wish to check out the Admiral Nimitz State Historic Site. This establishment focuses more on Nimitz' personal life in terms of how he directly influenced the outcome of the war. Enchanted Rock State Park on Ranch Road offers its visitors so much to do and see. Some of the highlights include beautiful geologic formations, rock climbing, hiking, bird watching, and picnicking for those that prefer to avoid all the hub-bub and just chill instead.
