The town's founder, Ira Allen, led a group of Mormon pioneers to Camp Hollow and built Fort Hyrum, which originally housed 120 people. The town is named after the brother of the founder of the Mormon Church. Today, outdoor recreation is a way of life in Hyrum. Residents spend their time at the nearby Hyrum State Park, the Hyrum Reservoir, and the Hardware Ranch, which is part of a wildlife management area that herds of elk spend their winter months in.
