New Market is a sleepy little town in the nooks and crannies of the Shenandoah Mountains. It's a bit of a throwback -- a small town that doesn't change much -- where neighbors have known each other for decades. It still manages to be open and attractive to newcomers, with a certain quaintness that hearkens back to the mid-century.

Weather

In a town of just over 2,000 people, there are no real neighborhoods in New Market -- you're either in town or you're not. If you're looking for apartment rentals, you'll have to stay in town close to its few shops and amenities. Outside of the downtown area, it's merely houses and housing complexes.

Living in New Market

With so much history behind the town and the area, it's hard to go anywhere in New Market without running into a piece of it. The New Market Battlefield State Park is a big part of the town and draws folks from all around the area and nation. It is the site of yearly reenactments and a huge destination for Civil War buffs. The New Market Historic District, encompassing a handful of buildings in the center of town, includes the Lee-Jackson Hotel.

One of the great draws of New Market is its location in the Shenandoah Valley. It is surrounded by square miles upon square miles of green, fertile mountains begging to be hiked through. There are plenty of outdoor activities year round, including watching local sports teams -- both the Rebels of the Valley Baseball League and the New Market Shockers of the Rockingham County Baseball League call this town their home.

Even with a small population, New Market is still able to support some of the finer things in life. The Schultz Theater and School of Performing Arts puts on performances throughout the year and is considered one of the top performing arts groups in the state.
