Ammunition, explosives and the federal government, Nitro has ties to them all. During the First World War, the city was set to house an American ammunition production facility and an explosive and chemical manufacturing plant was built in conjunction. This, "magic city," is a living, breathing memorial to World War I.
Nitro is a small city that rests on the Kanawha River in southwestern West Virginia. The streets that aren't lined with antique shops are lined with trees instead. Small-town charm is alive and well here, and residents go the extra mile to ensure space is used to its maximum potential.
Moving to Nitro
When moving to town you'll find a mixture of homes and city apartments for rent. Single-family houses complete with a yard and two or three bedrooms are common and it should be easy to secure a studio apartment for rent in Nitro.
Rental prices in Nitro are a bit more expensive than those in surrounding cities, however for the space and proximity to major thoroughfares, it's well worth the extra penny or two.
When signing the lease, make certain you've done your homework on the rental property and save enough money for the first month's rent and a small deposit. Bring proof of income or information pertaining to your cosigner. Many companies will run a credit check, and if it's not up to par, you'll need somebody to vouch for you financially.
Nitro has a walk score of 38, meaning you'll likely need a vehicle to maneuver these streets. While some areas offer proximity to shops, dining and entertainment, it's more likely you'll find yourself hopping in the car to take care of any chores.
Nitro Neighborhoods
Renting an apartment in Nitro won't be as difficult as choosing a neighborhood since there's really only two of them to choose from.
Cross Lanes and Maplewood Drive: This suburban community is located just east of I-64 and is comprised mainly of three and four bedroom single-family abodes and apartment complexes. Dining in the area largely consists of chain fare options that include Pizza Hut and Bob Evans. The Dollar Store is nearby for all of your wanton shopping needs and Mardi Gras Casino will allow you to gamble, watch the Greyhound races, or enjoy fare in one of their two restaurants, The French Quarter or Caf̩ Orleans, strong theme here, but beloved, none the less.
City Center: Composed of shops, boutiques, restaurants and riverside green space, this section of town, located just east of the river, creates the buzz in Nitro. Single-family homes and small apartment units abound and rent is a bit more expensive, due in part to it's proximity to area attractions. Dining in this community offers familiar chains like Dairy Queen, Wendy's and Arby's, but also offers local shops such as Diehl's home cooking, Rio Grande Mexican fare and Tudor's Biscuit World, a 24-hour greasy spoon that'll cure all ailments. Salons, the Nitro Supermarket and a bevy of antique stores that include Antiques on the Avenue and the Nitro Antique Mall are all near the river, here in city center.
Living in Nitro
The Nitro Pool and City Park Pavilion often collaborate to hold pool parties, movies and DJ events for locals. The calendars can be found on the city website and allow for some fun with others in the community.
In the summer many festivals take place, Taste of Nitro is an event that allows locals to sample food and check out the restored antique cars of the area as they park along city blocks. Fireworks are commonplace on holidays in the downtown area. There's fun to be had here, if you're in the know.
For those seeking an outdoor excursion, head to the Nitro City Park, a riverside retreat located in the northwest corner of the community. Ridenour Lake and the adjoining Ridenour Park are also here and include 43 acres of space to hike, walk, and take in the regions habitat.
