Home to NASCAR greats, The Alabama Gang, Hueytown, AL, was once humming from more than a NASCAR driver's tires. In the early 1990s, there was a mysterious hum -- likely related to a large ventilation fan in an underground mine once in the area. It hasn't been heard since.
Both agriculture and industry formed the backbone of Hueytown, AL: a nice, quaint country town. The Woodward Iron Co. was formed here in 1881 and had a daily capacity of 250,000 tons of iron in 1909. But steel mills are part of the town's history, not its present. The last blast furnace closed in 1973. There was coal mining, too, at the turn of the century, which is another industry that is no longer part of the community. Left behind were several historic buildings from the mining era that are fascinating to explore, if you like that sort of thing. View Hueytown City Guide
