Overview of Findings
Apartment List has released Fresno’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of 111 million American renters nationwide.
"Fresno renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "They gave most categories average scores."
Key findings in Fresno include the following:
- Fresno renters gave their city a B- overall.
- The highest-rated categories for Fresno were quality of local schools (B+) and commute time (B).
- The areas of concern to Fresno renters are safety and crime rate (D) and pet-friendliness and state and local taxes, which both received F grades.
- Fresno earned similar scores to other cities in California, including Los Angeles (C+), San Jose (C), and Sacramento (C).
- Fresno performed well compared to other similar cities nationwide, including Tucson, AZ (D), Albuquerque, NM (C), and Oklahoma City, OK (C+).
- The top rated cities nationwide for renter satisfaction include Scottsdale, AZ, Irvine, CA, Boulder, CO and Ann Arbor, MI. The lowest rated cities include Tallahassee, FL, Stockton, CA, Dayton, OH, Detroit, MI and Newark, NJ.
Renters say:
- "I like it’s because it’s not really big. But there’s not a lot to do, either." – Esperanza C.
- "I love the environment, Grizzly Stadium and the new stores everywhere. The city is working to restore downtown and to build a high-speed rail to connect us to other cities." – Anon.
- "Love the convenient access to Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. There’s lots of bike paths, restaurants and outdoor malls. And the school system is one of the best." – Laura H.
- "I love the small town vibe. The freeway system could be better, but at least it doesn’t take long to go from Fresno to Clovis." – Cassandra S.
