Terryville attracts a lot of famous people, apparently. Actor Ted Knight was born here, while designer Betsey Johnson once lived here and actress Calista Flockhart's family still does.
Terryville is a census-designated place located within a town called Plymouth, which is fairly old, having been incorporated in 1795. Terryville is actually the biggest village within Plymouth, despite having only 5,587 residents. Plymouth's claim to fame is the manufacture of clocks, so it's no surprise that Terryville was named after a clockmaker's son. Thus, if clocks intrigue you, or even if you just need a place to live in a small, friendly village, be sure to give Terryville a chance.
Moving to Terryville
If you need to move soon, you should start looking for a rental property here right away, because the vacancy rate is pretty darned low. While that might make the job of finding places to live in Terryville rather hard, it does suggest that it's a popular place, and that's a good thing! You should at least take some time discovering why exactly so many people choose to move here. But first, learn a few facts about the housing here.
The Price for Housing
The average rental price in this city is a little higher than the national average, but it is lower than the median for Connecticut. This means if you are moving from another city in this state, you can expect some relief when it comes to your housing costs. The median price to buy a home follows the same pattern, and about three fourths of the people here choose to buy instead of rent. That's right at the national average for the percentage of owner occupied housing. But still, if you are in search of a rental apartment, house rental, or condo rentals, you can surely find several here.
Types of Homes Available
More specifically, over half of the homes here are detached houses. But about one third of the housing is made up of small apartment complexes, and there are even a few townhomes scattered around the village. What you won't find in this suburban area are mobile homes, though, so if that's what you're looking for, you might need to look in a more rural area with lots of land. Otherwise, if you are looking for a house or apartment here with 3 or 4 bedrooms, you are in luck, because there is plenty of that type of housing in Terryville.
Signing the Lease Documents
After you locate your dream home in this little village, you should get ready to fill out the lease paperwork. It will probably ask how you plan to pay the rent every month. Fight the urge to respond, "I don't" or "What rent?" Instead, bring along a few of your pay stubs to prove you have some type of income. If you have a summary of your rental history or a great credit report, that's even better. A check for any necessary deposits would also be helpful, since that's usually required before you can start dragging all your stuff into your new place.
Neighborhoods in Terryville
Being a census-designated place and all, Terryville doesn't really have distinct neighborhoods. Heck, its land area is only a little less than 3 square miles, so it's kind of hard to fit neighborhoods here anyway. But you can still get some idea of where you should move in this village.
North Terryville: This area is mostly residential, but there are a few local businesses around. It happens to be located near the scenic Wood Acres Farm, which offers hayrides, horse drawn carriages, and more. Old Marsh Pond, Lake Winfield, and Zeiner Pond are a few of the other attractions here, so this area is nice if you like bodies of water. And if you don't, you can always take the U.S. 6, which runs through here, to another part of town. Note that there's an apartment complex called Plymouth Village Apartments in this area.
South Terryville: There are more lakes and ponds in this area, which means you just can't get away from water in Terryville! In the southern part of this village are Hidden Lake, Fall Mountain Lake, Myers Pond, and Buttermilk Falls, to name a few places that are perfect for fishing and sightseeing.
West Terryville: If you want to be as close as possible to Route 8, which can take you north and south, the western part of Terryville is for you. This area is also close to Lake Plymouth, Brophy Pond, and the greenery surrounding these bodies of water.
East Terryville: If you want to make it easy to get to nearby Bristol and its many amenities, check out the eastern part of the village. Of course, there are plenty of bodies of water here, too, such as Marsh Brook and Poland River. Plus there's Baldwin Park, so hopefully you like to go outside and get close to nature!
Living in Terryville
You probably get the hint that there are lots of outdoor attractions here, including lakes, rivers, ponds, parks, and farms. So bring your sunblock, fishing gear, and a picnic and get ready to become one with nature. But there will probably be days when you want to stay indoors, in which case Terryville can accommodate you pretty well.
When you want to eat, there's Hometown Pizza, Dawn's Desserts, Terryville Pizza House, Chute Gates Steakhouse and Saloon, and The Whole Donut. Prefer to shop? You can check out Rite Aid, Lee Hardware, and The Village Florist. So yes, this village could use a bit better selection of stores, but it's pretty easy to simply go into one of the neighboring cities for more stores.
For example, the nearby city of Bristol has Bristol Plaza, Shoppers Junction Shopping Center, and Bristol Farm Plaza Shopping Center. This is all a straight shot down the U.S. 6 freeway, about 7 minutes east. You can also drive south for 10 minutes to Waterbury to visit Naugatuck Valley Shopping Center, Colonial Plaza, and Brass Mill Center. These shopping centers are where you will find stores like Walmart, Target, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and other major shopping destinations. Plus, Waterbury has a movie theater, so you know there's always something to do here on a rainy day.
