Creve Coeur, Illinois, is home to Fort Crevecoeur -- the name translates to "Fort Broken Heart" (sounds sad, we know). No, the name isn't derived from soap-opera-worthy love triangles and messy breakups; the French fort was built in 1860 by explorers Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, and Henri de Tonti as a sign of peace, and the name comes from the trials and tribulations experienced during the build process.

As a suburb of Peoria, the Village of Creve Coeur is considered a part of the Peoria Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the US Census Bureau, it is an incorporated village that had a population of around 5,421 as of 2012. With the village's location so near Peoria and its small size, some might call it a bedroom community that is perfect for the commuting worker. The entire village spans only a bit over four miles, and yet it has two zip codes.
Moving to Creve Coeur
Moving to Creve Coeur can be tricky if you are looking to rent -- seriously tricky. Most of the homes here are lived in by their owners, so finding apartments for rent seems to be a game that must be played out over time. Be prepared to wait until the right rental property comes along. You also may want to consider changing your exact wants as you wait. With that said, it is not impossible to find rental homes in Creve Coeur, just harder than in a larger city. Contacting a local real estate agent may help you have an easier time finding rental condos and furnished apartments. You'll also find mobile homes and other options available, too. What you likely won't find are huge apartment complexes, since Creve Coeur is such a small town. Unless you prefer living in a large complex, this won't be too much of an issue. In fact, you'll have a better chance of having a larger yard and more privacy than you would in a large complex, which means you can invite all of your new friends over for backyard barbecues.
Neighborhoods in Creve Coeur
Since Creve Coeur is so small, it doesn't have any official neighborhoods. However, since it is almost within earshot of East Peoria, there are loads of things to do for fun within a few miles. Main Street leads right into East Peoria, meaning that residents have easy access to the larger city. There are also two larger interstates, I-474 and I-74, that run around Creve Coeur, providing easy access to anywhere you'd want to go!
Living in Creve Coeur
You won't find a plethora of restaurants and nightlife hot spots in a village this size, and public transportation is pretty well nonexistent. What you will find is a small-town pace of life and access to bigger-city amenities. That said, there are some places to eat and recreate without leaving your new hometown; you can visit Fort Crevecoeur Park and drop in for a bite at Larry's Driftwood Pizza or Kuchies on the Water (you may be missing out on the best corn fritters you've ever had if you don't stop by Kuchies.)
Since you'll be so close to Peoria, you can hop, skip, and jump right on over to find things like the Peoria Zoo, Wildlife Prairie State Park, the Peoria Riverfront Museum and many, many more attractions. With options like that just a few miles down the road, you're sure to have something to do all the time!
