Charlestown, Indiana, is a Louisville suburb of 7,585 people at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census. This city has strong historic roots in the area that you can easily see as you drive through town and gaze at the well-preserved buildings giving you a glimpse of the past. This was a bustling and prosperous town at its inception, enjoying the mill industry before the industrial revolution came along. These days it's a quiet residential suburb that provides calm and safe living outside of Louisville.
If you like a low cost of living -- and who doesn't? -- Charlestown may be the place for you to hang your hat, put down roots, or whatever metaphor floats your boat. This is a whisper-quiet town with a slow housing market, which is great news for a nice little opportunist like you! So, you should find inexpensive places to rent with your name on at least one of them. No, really, the landlord sees you coming and staples your name on the house! Just kidding, but wouldn't it be nice? Anyway, because this is a smaller town, it's not served by any apartment complexes. You deal with property management companies who are juggling single family houses and apartment homes, as well as seeking out a house rent option. Private landlords are also somewhat prevalent here, which often gets you some perks such as all utilities paid properties in Charlestown, IN. Just make sure to shoot the landlord your biggest smile.
A bulk of the property in this area is owned, so it takes some time to have appropriate rental property opening up for new renters. Check in when the seasons are changing, as these time periods often see some tenant turnover with the winter months. During your apartment search, it may take some time to find the perfect apartment for you; but when you want to experience Midwestern small-town living and prices, it's hard to find a better option than this city.
Charlestown has three unique neighborhoods for your consideration.
City Center: This area takes you to all of the businesses and some lower priced residential options. You can get around on foot well here, although not all of the business services you need are in this location. Dang it! No worries -- you can still go to Louisville or surrounding towns when you need something pressing.
Route 3 / Route 62: This neighborhood is primarily residential. It is nestled in between the two other neighborhoods in this area, City Center and Owen/Rolling Hills. Told you Charlestown is small!
Owen / Rolling Hills: This community is on the eastern side of town and provides extra space to stretch out, as well as slightly higher prices on rentals.
Charlestown, IN is a quintessential commuter town, as most of the local businesses are either family-owned without many employees, or are retail establishments. Louisville offers a variety of industry options, so if you're actively seeking employment the area's job market is fairly strong for the Midwest. The community comes together on a regular basis for many events, such as Star Wars day, Founder's Day, and food festivals. This is a small but active community where you'll really feel the need to get to know your neighbor. (You don't have a choice because you'll see them at many community events.) This is the type of friendliness and hospitality you don't get in many other cities these days.
Charlestown also has many parks and other outdoor recreational spots available for the outdoorsmen (or women) among you. It's also great if you're a dog owner, so you can let Fido or Rufus get exercise before he destroys your apartment, and your landlord steals your security deposit. Other events that you'll find in this area include Christmas celebrations and Music in the Park. While this is a quiet community overall, it can also be an incredibly socially engaging one, which you'll find out once you've rented a one bedroom apartment in Charlestown. You'll be happy to call this neighborhood home before too long.
